Babatunji Wusu –
In Bauchi State, unidentified gunmen have shot and killed at least nine members of a neighborhood watch organization known as “Yan Ba Beli.”
The vigilante organization acquired notoriety for organizing attacks with assistance from state security agents against armed robbers and kidnappers all around the state.
While looking for bandits who have been terrorizing the local populations in the state’s Ningi local government region, vigilantes were killed in Gamji village’s forest.
Nine of the vigilantes were killed when the gunmen ambushed them, but several others managed to escape with injuries.
According to a local source who spoke with our correspondent, the incident occurred late on Sunday night while the ‘Yan Ba Beli’ were climbing the mountain near Gamji hamlet in pursuit of the bandits hibernating in the jungle.
He claimed that the bandits started shooting at the vigilante group members as soon as they turned into the trap.
Hon. Ibrahim Zubairu Mato, the caretaker chairman of the Ningi LGA, confirmed the attack, denounced it, and vowed that the government would keep up all efforts to safeguard innocent lives and property in the region.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) did not return messages left at his known cell phone number as of the time this story was filed, and the Bauchi State Police Command has not reacted to inquiries concerning the event.
