Alhassan Ado Doguwa, a former majority leader of the House of Representatives, has emphasized that following the rules is just as important as garnering enough votes to win an election.
In an appearance on Channels TV on Wednesday, Doguwa discussed the controversy surrounding Kano State’s 2023 elections.
He underlined that elections are subject to particular laws and guidelines in democracies like Nigeria’s.
Doguwa asserts that following these guidelines is essential to guaranteeing free and fair elections.
“What is going on in Kano, in my opinion, is normal. Kano has always been a progressive, forward-thinking state in terms of politics and ideology,” he stated.
Everyone has the right to express their own opinions, but when it comes to matters of this kind, disputes are always the turning point in our particular brand of politics.
“It’s possible that some of our people don’t understand that elections, particularly in democratic environments like the one in which we operate in Nigeria, are always about the rules of the game and not just about who won.”
“Being elected can involve running for office and following the guidelines set down in the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s constitution and electoral laws. It is also one of the requirements you must meet in order to win a free and fair election.
“A free and fair election involves more than just counting the votes; even after the votes were counted, some were allegedly cast in violation of the law.
You have to acknowledge that obeying the rules is the only way to succeed in our brand of politics and democracy, which extends beyond Nigeria.
