Babatunji Wusu –
A stampede at the mansion of former Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Wamakko reportedly killed at least nine people and critically injured many more.
The tragic episode occurred on Thursday night as residents fought for palliatives to be shared at the Senator’s home in the state’s Gawon Nama district.
It was reported that a volunteer operator from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was among those killed in the event.
It was also discovered that individuals injured in the incident were sent to hospitals for treatment and are responding to their treatments.
According to reports, Wamakko, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Sokoto North District in the Senate, is covering the medical expenses.
Responding to the development, Ahmed Rufai, spokesperson for the Sokoto Police Command, informed TheCable on Sunday that an inquiry into the event has begun.
Rufai stated that he was unable to determine the actual number of casualties at the scene of the tragic event.
The tragedy adds to the country’s escalating number of stampedes in recent months.
On March 22, three students from Nasarawa State University in Keffi (NSUK) were killed in a stampede while distributing food supplied by the state government.
A few days later, about seven persons were killed in a stampede while distributing zakat (almsgiving) to Bauchi state inhabitants.
