The Anambra State Police Command has successfully recovered the bodies of three more victims of the horrific boat tragedy on the River Niger that occurred last Wednesday.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, confirmed the recovery in a press statement issued on Friday.
The sad tragedy, which killed prominent Nollywood actor Junior Pope and four others, occurred while the boat was returning from a film site in Anambra West Local Government Area to its takeoff point in Asaba, Delta State.
The boat, one of two carrying a movie crew, capsized on the busy waterway, resulting in a substantial loss for the entertainment industry.
Following the accident, the Actors Guild of Nigeria has adopted a tough stance, barring its members from participating in film productions including riverine locations or boat trips, emphasizing the dangers connected with such activities.
SP Ikenga also stated that the Marine Police unit carried out the recovery operation, discovering the remaining three dead late Thursday evening.
Along with this information, he issued a strong caution to all waterway users in the state to increase their safety awareness.
The police warned travelers to avoid dangerous behaviours that could threaten their own and others’ lives while travelling by water.
He said, “The two of the bodies were recovered on Thursday, April 11, 2024, while the last was washed in by the tide this morning.
“All the bodies have been deposited in the hospital mortuary in Asaba while the President of the Guild of Actors and Actresses has been notified of the recovery.
“The CP promised an expedited investigation into the sad accident that claimed the lives of five actors. He also commended the Command’s Marine Unit and its Commander for dedication to duty.”
