  • The Kano State Government revoked the accreditation of 14 journalists covering the Government House.
  • Affected journalists reported disagreements with government media managers as a possible reason for the revocation.
  • The ban followed the journalists’ resistance to security restrictions at a condolence visit and a meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.
  • The banned individuals include a mix of directors, producers, and cameramen from various media outlets.

The Kano State Government has revoked the accreditation of 14 journalists assigned to cover activities at the Government House in Kano. The decision was communicated on Monday through a memo signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, who requested that the affected organizations submit replacements for the banned reporters.

While no official reason was provided for this action, some of the journalists indicated that their disagreements with government media managers over issues of privileges may have contributed to the revocation. Reports suggest that these journalists were barred from covering Governor Abba Yusuf’s condolence visit to Jigawa last week following a petrol tanker explosion, as they resisted security personnel at the Jigawa Government House who restricted access to the event.

Tensions also arose when the reporters met with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed during his visit to Kano for a religious event, further upsetting government media managers.

The list of banned journalists includes directors, producers, and cameramen from both government-owned and private media organizations:

  • Aliyu Yusuf, Director of Public Enlightenment
  • Sani Suraj Abubakar, PRO
  • Adamu Dabo, Chairman Crew – FRCN
  • Naziru Yau, ARTV
  • Sadiq Sani, ARTV
  • Rabiu Sunusi, Triumph
  • Umar Sheka, Freedom
  • Jabir Dan’abba, Nasara
  • Simon, AIT Cameraman
  • Nasiru Danhaki, NTA
  • Labara, Sound Manager
  • Abdullahi Sule, Driver
  • Murtala Baba Kusa, Express
