Alhassan Yahaya, the National Deputy President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has been elected as the new National President of the union. Yahaya secured 436 votes in the election, triumphing over Dele Atunbi, the outgoing National Treasurer, who received 97 votes, and Garba Muhammad, who garnered 39 votes.

The election, held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, brought together 602 delegates from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including the Federal Capital Territory. These delegates came together to choose the leadership that will guide the NUJ for the next three years.

Yahaya’s victory marks a significant milestone for the NUJ, with expectations that he will prioritize the welfare of journalists and strengthen the principles of ethical journalism throughout his tenure. Outgoing National President Christopher Isiguzo assured the delegates that the transition of power would be smooth and that he would not interfere with the operations of the new leadership.
