- The APC has downplayed the significance of the recent meeting between former NNPP presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Cross River State governor, Donald Duke, and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
- The ruling party emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s influence far surpasses that of the opposition figures.
- APC’s National Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, asserted that none of the opposition figures poses a real threat to President Tinubu’s government.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the recent closed-door meeting between ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, and former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso as insignificant to the political landscape.
In a statement, Bala Ibrahim, the APC’s National Publicity Director, expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu’s political relevance far exceeds that of these opposition figures. Ibrahim stated, “Tinubu is head and shoulders above them in modern politics in Nigeria,” referring to the political figures involved in the meeting, including Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Duke, and former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Ibrahim also noted that despite Obasanjo’s history of supporting opposition candidates like ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi—who both lost to Buhari and Tinubu, respectively—these figures have been decisively defeated in recent elections. He mocked the idea that the meeting would pose any serious challenge to the current administration, asserting that no combination of the individuals involved could pose a meaningful threat to Tinubu’s leadership.
In his remarks, Ibrahim further emphasized that even if the group were to meet endlessly, they would not have a significant impact on the APC’s dominance in Nigerian politics.
