The Federal Government has deployed an electronic border (e-border) solution across 40% of Nigeria’s borders as part of efforts to strengthen national security.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this during a media interaction in Abuja on Tuesday. He emphasized that leveraging technology will significantly enhance border surveillance and safeguard lives and property.
“A secure border ensures a safer nation,” Tunji-Ojo stated, adding that newly acquired vehicles have also been deployed to bolster border management.
He noted that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is evolving beyond a mere passport-issuing agency. “We made a deliberate decision to place migration management and border control at the heart of NIS operations. I’m pleased to announce that the first phase of our e-border solution is fully completed, covering 40% of the project’s design nationwide. The second phase is expected to commence this year,” he revealed.
As part of broader border security measures, the government is also introducing an e-gate system at airports to streamline entry and exit processes. Additionally, Nigeria has adopted the Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Records (PNR) systems to enhance traveler identification and border control.
Tunji-Ojo further disclosed that with the commissioning of a command and control technology center at the NIS headquarters, real-time monitoring of land borders and all airport entry points is now possible.
Meanwhile, the minister expressed concerns over Nigeria’s visa issuance process abroad, noting that, unlike developed nations where approvals are handled domestically, Nigeria had been processing visas overseas. To address this, the federal government has established a centralized Visa Approval Center in Abuja to unify the process and improve efficiency.
