As Nigerian workers join their counterparts across the globe to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has commended the nation’s workforce for their resilience, diligence, and continued commitment to national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

In a goodwill message conveyed through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Senator Akpabio expressed heartfelt appreciation to Nigerian workers, describing them as the “backbone of the economy” whose efforts have sustained the nation through difficult times.

“Today, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of Nigerian workers,” Akpabio stated. “We, in the Senate and of course, the National Assembly, acknowledge your invaluable contributions to our nation’s development.”

He praised their ability to persevere and maintain productivity even in the face of harsh economic realities, noting that their sacrifices have kept the wheels of the nation’s economy turning.

“I commend your resilience in the face of challenges and recognise your role in driving our economy forward,” he said. “Despite obvious challenges, you remain the backbone of our economy. I salute your unwavering commitment to excellence and productivity. Your contributions are vital to our nation’s progress.”

Assurance on Labour Rights and Legislation

Senator Akpabio used the occasion to assure Nigerian workers that their welfare, safety, and working conditions remain a top priority for the 10th National Assembly under his leadership. He pledged that the legislature would focus on enacting and supporting labour-friendly laws aimed at improving the quality of life for Nigerian workers across all sectors.

He emphasized that the National Assembly is committed to ensuring that workers’ rights are protected and that they are not victimised for demanding their entitlements or seeking justice through lawful means.

“Under our eyes, no Nigerian worker will be victimised on account of expressing himself or herself either in demanding for their rights or seeking legal redress,” the Senate President stated.

Akpabio further reiterated the readiness of the Senate to work collaboratively with the Executive arm of government to address issues affecting workers and to create policies that support employment, economic growth, and prosperity.

“I must say that Nigerian workers are our pride and we will not shirk our responsibility working together with the Executive to address workers’ concerns and create opportunities for growth and prosperity. Together, we shall build a brighter future for Nigerian workers and our great nation,” he added.

Call for Peaceful Celebration

The Senate President concluded by extending his personal greetings and best wishes to workers across the country, urging them to celebrate peacefully and continue to uphold the values of hard work and patriotism.

“On behalf of my family, constituents and the 10th National Assembly, I heartily rejoice with the workers and wish them a fruitful and peaceful celebration,” he said.

This year’s Workers’ Day comes at a time when Nigerian workers are grappling with inflation, wage concerns, job insecurity, and demands for improved working conditions — issues that the labour unions have consistently raised with the government.

Senator Akpabio’s message is expected to resonate with many workers and stakeholders, especially as the country looks toward legislative reforms that align with workers’ aspirations.
