A suspected vandal met a tragic end on Thursday night after being electrocuted while attempting to steal components from a 500KVA transformer at the popular Baba Abiye prayer ground in Ede, Osun State.
According to a statement issued by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), through its spokesperson, Kike Owoeye, the incident was discovered early Friday morning by a concerned resident who alerted authorities. The body of the deceased was recovered and taken to Alpha Hospital by the police, while another suspect was arrested at the scene and is now in custody.
“The attempted act of vandalism at the Baba Abiye substation resulted in the electrocution of one suspect. Fortunately, a resident raised the alarm, leading to the swift response of the police and arrest of an accomplice,” Owoeye confirmed.
IBEDC condemned the act, warning that vandalism not only endangers lives but also disrupts electricity supply to entire communities.
“Vandalism poses grave risks to lives, undermines public safety, and disrupts power supply to communities. We commend the vigilance and prompt action of the local residents and urge the public to remain alert,” Owoeye said.
