President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday paid a sympathy visit to victims of the recent deadly attack in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where no fewer than 59 persons were killed and many others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The president arrived at the Tactical Air Command of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi at about 12:58 p.m. and immediately proceeded to a medical facility where survivors of the massacre are receiving treatment.
Tinubu interacted briefly with the injured victims and medical personnel, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to ensuring justice and lasting peace in the region.
Following the hospital visit, the president held a closed-door meeting with key stakeholders at the new Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House. The meeting was aimed at finding a comprehensive solution to the recurrent attacks that have plagued rural communities in the state.
Among those in attendance were Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and several governors from the North-Central zone.
The president is also expected to meet with families of the deceased, displaced persons, and traditional rulers as part of his peace and reconciliation mission.
Tinubu’s visit comes amid increased pressure on the federal government to end the cycle of violence in Benue and other parts of the North-Central region, where farming communities have come under frequent attacks by suspected armed herders.
