The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has announced a major milestone, reporting over $800 million in combined private and public investments and the creation of more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs since its inception.

In a rapid expansion, the number of CNG-powered vehicles in Nigeria has surged past 100,000—a fivefold increase in just one year—attributed to the initiative’s aggressive promotion of cleaner, more affordable energy solutions.

Matilda Johnson, PCNGI’s Brand & Corporate Communications Manager, disclosed these achievements on Friday in response to recent misleading media reports. She highlighted the Dangote Group’s landmark deployment of 4,000 CNG trucks, 100 virtual pipeline vehicles, and multiple daughter stations as evidence of the initiative’s broad impact.

Johnson also emphasized PCNGI’s support for local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which has driven the growth of approved vehicle conversion centers from just 7 at the programme’s start to over 300, with an average of 20 new centers opening weekly.

She criticized the media for ignoring these concrete outcomes, instead publishing speculative stories based on unnamed sources and apparent personal agendas. Johnson clarified that the removal of the list of approved conversion centers from the PCNGI website was due to scheduled updates aimed at expanding and improving transparency, not an attempt to hide information.

Furthermore, Johnson condemned the misrepresentation of David Idakwo, identified in reports as a senior decision-maker at PCNGI, as false. She confirmed that Idakwo is a mid-level field officer hired in late 2024 with no involvement in executive decisions. Allegations linking his previous private business affiliations to nepotism were described as misleading and unfair to legitimate business pursuits.

Reaffirming PCNGI’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and national development, Johnson stated that the initiative’s strict enforcement of compliance and fair distribution of government-subsidized kits has challenged those who might seek to exploit the system for corrupt purposes.
