The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tamb
uwal, a day after detaining him over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling ₦189 billion.
Mr Tambuwal, now representing Sokoto South in the Senate, was freed on Tuesday after being questioned by investigators at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja. He had honoured an invitation to appear at the commission’s office around 11 a.m. on Monday before being taken into custody.
Investigators accuse the former two-term governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives of breaching the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, through massive cash transactions during his tenure as Sokoto governor between 2015 and 2023. The EFCC has not yet issued an official statement on his release.
The detention has triggered political reactions, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar describing it as an attempt by the Bola Tinubu administration to intimidate opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 elections. Atiku alleged that the EFCC is being used to pressure political figures into defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming corruption allegations are dropped once they switch allegiance.
