The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, CFR, has been conferred with the fellowship of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN).

The honour, which comes with the designation of Fellow Certified National Accountant (FCNA), was bestowed on the lawmaker during the 30th Annual National Conference of the Association held in Abuja on Tuesday.

President and Chairman of ANAN Council, Chief (Hajia) Zuwairat Talatu Kishimi, FCNA, administered the oath of allegiance on Senator Barau, describing him as a worthy ambassador of the accounting profession.

“By the virtues of the powers conferred on me as the President and Chairman of the Council of this great association by Act 76 of 1993 (CAP A 26 LFN, 2004), I hereby admit you into the fellowship of the association. With this, you can add FCNA to your name. We are proud of you and we celebrate you,” Kishimi declared, to a thunderous ovation from participants.

Aside from the fellowship, the Deputy Senate President was also presented with a special award for chairing the association’s national conference.

Dignitaries at the event showered encomiums on the Kano-born lawmaker, including the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ojunjimi, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

Similarly, ANAN’s Chairman of Conferences, Seminars, and Workshops Committee, Mal. Adamu Abubakar, hailed Senator Barau as a reform-minded statesman whose legislative contributions continue to shape Nigeria’s fiscal policy.

“Senator Barau’s career reflects exceptional mastery of public finance management, sharpened through his leadership of Appropriation Committees in both Chambers of the National Assembly,” he noted.

In his remarks, Senator Barau commended ANAN for its role in building professionalism in the financial and accounting sector, stressing that the body’s emphasis on ethics, governance and accountability complements the National Assembly’s legislative reforms.

“ANAN deserves recognition for its strategic role in reinforcing ethics and governance through collaborations and regulatory enhancements. These efforts support the National Assembly’s drive to reform finance-related laws to bolster Nigeria’s financial integrity,” he said.

The Deputy Senate President also highlighted ANAN’s focus on public sector financial management, describing accountants as pivotal to ensuring accountability and proper use of public funds.

According to him, such efforts align with government’s emphasis on fiscal discipline as provided for by the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
