Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has denounced a viral post on X that advised Igbo men to avoid marrying women from their ethnic group. The controversial tweet claimed Igbo wives were likely to falsely accuse their husbands of raping their daughters, urging men to seek wives in East Africa instead.

The anonymous user wrote, “Dear Igbo men, instead of marrying Igbo woman that’ll falsely accuse you of raping your daughter, better look outside for a wife… Go to East Africa, especially Rwanda and pick a damsel.”

Nnaji, an indigene of Mbaise in Imo State, swiftly condemned the comment, accusing the poster of promoting harmful stereotypes and dodging personal accountability.

“In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it,” she fired back.

While some commenters argued the post targeted false accusers rather than all Igbo women, Nnaji maintained her stance, warning against broad generalisations.

“The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. ‘Not all women,” she added.

Her response has reignited conversations around gender-based stereotypes, online misogyny and ethnic profiling on social media platforms.
