Veteran journalist and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has declared that only former Vice President Atiku Abubakar understands what it takes to mount a serious challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Momodu criticised the opposition for failing to unite or build a workable strategy ahead of the polls, warning that time is running out. In a Facebook post, he argued that the opposition “is not ready” for the battle to unseat Tinubu.
He faulted presidential hopefuls who, he said, believe they can defeat the president without first forging a common front. “Contesting for the highest office in any country is no child’s play,” he wrote.
According to him, Atiku—now on his seventh presidential attempt—remains the only opposition figure “meticulously and practically” preparing for the contest.
Momodu stressed that defeating a “ruthless competitor” would require far more than online popularity. He listed a massive campaign fund, nationwide structures, religious balancing and broad ethnic support as key ingredients for a competitive challenge.
He added that many opposition politicians appear unprepared or have simply abandoned their ambitions. “It is either they’ve given up on their dreams or they don’t mind Tinubu continuing with this charade of a government,” he said.
