President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to Benin Republic, following the attempted overthrow of President Patrice Talon.

In his letter to the upper chamber, Tinubu urged lawmakers to endorse the peace mission aimed at stabilising Cotonou after armed assailants launched a coordinated attack on Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo area early Sunday.

The intervention request comes days after the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) joined Beninese security forces in a swift counter-operation to suppress the uprising and secure key government locations.

If approved, Nigeria will formally participate in a regional peacekeeping effort to prevent the escalation of the coup attempt and restore order in the neighbouring West African state.
