Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the administration of Bola Tinubu of prioritising political battles and backing ethnic militia groups instead of decisively confronting the country’s worsening security crisis.

Atiku’s criticism followed a deadly terrorist attack in Borno State.

In a statement posted on X on Friday, the former vice president condemned the attack by suspected terrorists on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, located in Gwoza Local Government Area, where more than 100 residents were reportedly abducted.

Describing the incident as “deeply troubling,” Atiku said the Federal Government’s response to the attack and similar incidents has fallen short.

He warned that the rising wave of violence across the country has become so pervasive that both the government and the public appear increasingly desensitised to the persistent bloodshed.

The former vice president further alleged that the Federal Government is gradually losing control of the fight against terrorism and violent attacks across the country.

According to him, rather than intensifying efforts to curb insecurity, the government appears more focused on targeting political opponents and empowering what he described as self-serving ethnic militia groups.

“It is unfortunate that the current Federal Government appears to be losing its grip on the fight against terrorism and violent attacks. Instead, it seems more focused on unleashing intense pressure against political opponents and enabling self-serving ethnic militia groups,” Atiku said.

He added that it was disheartening that those responsible for internal security, along with members of the ruling party’s elite, remain preoccupied with consolidating political power while civilians and security personnel continue to fall victim to violent attacks.
