  • Several soldiers were also feared killed during the assault on the base and surrounding community.
  • The incident comes less than 72 hours after another senior officer, Lt. Col. SI Iliyasu, was killed in Konduga.

Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, a senior officer and Commanding Officer in the Nigerian Army, was reportedly killed during a Boko Haram attack on a military base in Kukawa, Borno State.

The attackers also targeted residents in the Kukawa community during the assault. A military source confirmed that Farouq and several of his men were among those killed in the attack.

The development comes less than 72 hours after another senior officer, Lieutenant Colonel SI Iliyasu of the 222 Battalion, was killed in Konduga, also in Borno State.
