In a result that defied the form books and channeled the spirit of 1976, Championship side Southampton knocked out Arsenal with a 2-1 victory at St Mary’s on Saturday night. Wearing a commemorative yellow jersey to mark the 50th anniversary of their famous FA Cup final win over Manchester United, the Saints produced a performance of immense grit to secure a spot in the semifinals alongside Manchester City and Chelsea.

The match began with the home side absorbing significant pressure from the Premier League leaders, but it was Southampton who struck first in the 35th minute. Following a cross from James Bree that Ben White misjudged, Ross Stewart was on hand to fire past Kepa Arrizabalaga. While Arsenal dominated possession for much of the contest, they struggled to break down a resilient Saints defense anchored by manager Tonda Eckert, whose unbeaten run now extends to a remarkable 15 games.

Arsenal finally found an equalizer in the 68th minute through substitute Viktor Gyökeres, who converted a clever cutback from Kai Havertz. It seemed the Gunners were destined to find a winner as they pinned Southampton back, but the hosts remained a constant threat on the counter. The decisive moment arrived in the 85th minute when Tom Fellows drove into the heart of the Arsenal defense before sliding the ball to Shea Charles, who clinically slotted home from 12 yards to send the home fans into a frenzy.

The defeat marks a painful double blow for Mikel Arteta’s side, coming just weeks after their Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City. For Arsenal, the record 14-time winners, the exit ends their hopes of a domestic cup trophy this season, leaving them to focus entirely on their Premier League title race and upcoming Champions League quarterfinal against Sporting Lisbon. Meanwhile, Southampton’s fairytale run continues as they prepare for a trip to Wembley, proving once again that the magic of the FA Cup is alive and well.

With Southampton now in the semifinals, do you think they have what it takes to replicate their 1976 miracle and go all the way to lift the trophy?
