The footballing world was met with somber news on Saturday as São Paulo officially announced the retirement of former Brazilian international Oscar at the age of 34. The midfield maestro, known for his technical brilliance and clinical finishing, has been forced to hang up his boots due to ongoing cardiac complications. The decision comes after a series of health scares that began in November, when Oscar was hospitalized for five days following a sudden collapse during training.
Extensive medical evaluations confirmed a diagnosis of vasovagal syncope, a condition that causes a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, leading to fainting. While common in some contexts, the physical demands of professional football made continuing his career a significant risk. Although his contract with his boyhood club was set to run until 2027, Oscar made the difficult choice to prioritize his health. “I wanted to do more for São Paulo… I think I had the ability and the age to play more, but unfortunately, this happened,” a visibly emotional Oscar shared on the club’s social media channels.
Oscar’s career has been nothing short of legendary. A key figure in Chelsea’s mid-2010s dominance, he secured two Premier League titles and the UEFA Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge. He later became a trailblazer in the Chinese Super League, lifting three titles with Shanghai Port before returning home to Brazil in December 2024. On the international stage, he was a mainstay for the Seleção, famously scoring Brazil’s lone goal in the 2014 World Cup semifinal and winning the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013.
As he transitions from the pitch to the stands, Oscar confirmed he will remain a lifelong supporter of the club where it all began. “I am ending my career here at São Paulo, a career that has taken me practically all over the world,” he noted. His departure marks the end of an era for a player who combined South American flair with European tactical discipline, leaving behind a legacy of silverware and unforgettable moments across three continents.
Which of Oscar’s iconic goals—his Champions League debut strike against Juventus or his World Cup goal for Brazil—do you believe best defines his incredible career?
