A fresh controversy has erupted around Nigeria’s electoral body as Grok, an AI assistant developed by xAI, has reportedly confirmed that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, is linked to a disputed X (formerly Twitter) account—fueling allegations of partisan involvement.
The development comes as social media platforms were flooded with claims that the INEC boss operated a personal account used to engage with politically sensitive posts.
Investigations revealed that the controversial account, identified by ID: 1567086242164101120, was allegedly created in September 2022—prior to Amupitan’s appointment as INEC Chairman. Despite a firm denial by INEC, which insisted its chairman does not operate a personal X account, online users have continued to unearth and circulate past posts linked to the handle.
The situation escalated when former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, publicly sought clarification from Grok.
“Hi @Grok, for the sake of transparency, what is the original name of the X account with ID: 1567086242164101120, and was it created in September 2022 before it was later changed?” he queried.
In response, Grok stated that the account was created on September 6, 2022, under the username joashamupitan, and retained that identity until April 10, 2026, when it was reportedly changed to Sundayvibe00.
The revelation has triggered a storm of reactions online, with users calling for accountability and further investigation.
One X user, @Normalyzed, demanded legislative action, stating that the Nigerian Senate should summon the INEC chairman, citing what he described as “receipts everywhere in the media.”
Another user, @White_Superion, suggested political undertones behind the controversy, alleging that the situation may have been amplified by internal interests seeking the chairman’s resignation.
The unfolding drama has intensified scrutiny on INEC’s leadership, raising critical questions about neutrality, transparency, and public trust as Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections.
