Real Sociedad claimed their fourth Copa del Rey title on Saturday night after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid. Following a tense 2-2 draw at the end of extra time, the Basque side triumphed 4-3 on spot-kicks. The hero of the night was goalkeeper Unai Marrero, who produced two magnificent saves to deny Atletico in front of a packed La Cartuja stadium in Seville.
The match began with incredible energy as Ander Barrenetxea scored for Sociedad after just 14 seconds. However, Atletico responded quickly through Ademola Lookman, who levelled the scoring in the 19th minute. Just before the interval, Mikel Oyarzabal restored the lead for the Basque outfit from the penalty spot. It looked like Sociedad would win in regulation time, but Julian Alvarez found a late equaliser with only seven minutes remaining to force the match into an extra period.
In the shootout, the pressure was immense for both teams. Unai Marrero set the tone by saving the first two efforts from Alexander Sorloth and Alvarez. Although Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso managed to stop one kick, Pablo Marin kept his cool to slot home the winner. This historic Spanish cup victory marks the first time Sociedad fans could celebrate in person since their 2021 win, which was played behind closed doors.
For manager Pellegrino Matarazzo, this Spanish cup victory is a career-defining moment. His side showed remarkable resilience to overcome a confident Atletico team that had recently reached the European semi-finals. This result mirrors the 1987 final between these two clubs, which also ended in a penalty win for the Basque side. This Spanish cup victory ensures that Sociedad remains a dominant force in domestic knockout football.
Do you think Real Sociedad’s penalty heroics prove they are currently the best knockout specialists in Spanish football?
