Former All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, has stated that it is normal practice for political parties to consistently work toward weakening the opposition, stressing that such dynamics are part of democratic systems worldwide.
Cole made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television Prime Time, where he reacted to recent political developments involving the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He explained that political competition naturally pushes parties to consolidate power while attempting to reduce the influence of their rivals, noting that such strategies are not unique to Nigeria.
“Every party, regardless of being APC or not, will always push to weaken the opposition. It is the opposition’s response to that push that makes democracy work. This happens all over the world,” he said.
Cole further emphasized the importance of a strong opposition in sustaining democratic governance, arguing that it enhances legitimacy and accountability within the political system.
He noted that emerging efforts by opposition parties to unite could strengthen Nigeria’s democratic space, even as he acknowledged that such moves would likely be resisted by the ruling party.
“Democracy always requires an opposition, and if that opposition is strong, then it brings legitimacy to the entire process,” he added.
The former APC candidate also highlighted the value of political competition, describing it as a catalyst for self-improvement among political actors.
“I’m one of those who believe that competition actually makes you better. It makes you think smarter and examine your strengths and weaknesses,” he said.
