A stakeholders’ meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja has erupted into violence, with a video circulating online showing chaotic scenes during preparations for the party’s senatorial primary in the Federal Capital Territory.
The meeting, which brought together party stakeholders including Senator Ireti Kingibe, was convened ahead of the distribution of materials for the FCT senatorial primary held on Saturday.
Sources said the Chairman of the election committee, Mr Abubakar Adams Chika, and the committee secretary, Mr David Godwin, had called stakeholders to the party secretariat to explain the electoral process and ensure a smooth exercise.
However, the session reportedly broke down after a group led by Tijani Mubarak, alongside four others, stormed the venue wielding sticks.
Eyewitnesses said Tijani confronted the election committee chairman, accusing him of refusing to honour an earlier request for a private discussion. The confrontation quickly escalated into shouting, shoving, and disorder, forcing the meeting into disarray.
Party insiders allege that Tijani opposed Senator Ireti Kingibe’s emergence as the party’s preferred candidate for the FCT senatorial ticket, a position she has now secured following the primary election.
Despite the violence, the ADC has since declared Ireti Kingibe the winner of the senatorial primary.
