The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, has warned corps members that they remain fully bound by Nigeria’s laws against cyberbullying and irresponsible social media behaviour during their service year.

Speaking in Abuja during an interview with NAN, Nafiu explained that corps members are still citizens of Nigeria and must obey all laws regulating online conduct. He stressed that the NYSC warning became necessary due to the increasing use of social media and content creation among young people.

According to him, authorities will thoroughly investigate any allegation linked to cyberbullying or unlawful online activity involving corps members. He added that offenders could face prosecution by the appropriate agencies if found guilty.

Nafiu also clarified that the NYSC does not provide legal representation for corps members facing such cases. However, he noted that the Legal Aid Council may offer assistance where necessary.

The NYSC boss encouraged corps members to use digital platforms responsibly and avoid actions that could damage their reputation or break the law. He said the scheme has intensified awareness campaigns and sensitisation programmes to educate participants on proper online behaviour.

While addressing concerns about digital content creation, Nafiu explained that the organisation is not against creative expression on social media. Instead, the scheme wants corps members to engage responsibly and operate within the boundaries of the law.

The latest NYSC warning highlights growing concerns about online behaviour, cyberbullying, and the influence of social media among Nigerian youths.

Do you think stricter rules are needed to regulate social media behaviour among young Nigerians?
