Speculation is mounting that American icon Serena Williams could make a surprise return to competitive tennis next month. Emerging Canadian talent Victoria Mboko, who is tipped to be her new doubles partner, insists it is entirely up to the legendary athlete to confirm the news. The 44-year-old superstar has not played a professional match since her third-round exit at the 2022 US Open.

Multiple media reports suggest that the American icon intends to play during the upcoming grass-court season. Rumours claim she has already requested a wildcard entry to compete in the doubles tournament at Queen’s Club in London, which begins on June 8. Former world number one Andy Roddick also discussed the potential pairing on his popular Served podcast.

Mboko, speaking after her recent victory at the French Open, chose to remain tight-lipped. “I think for me I want to kind of let the moment (be) for her,” she told reporters. “I feel like if she’s ready to come back on her own terms, then I feel like it’s up to her to announce that. Other than that, I don’t really have much to say. I think the moment is all up to her, and when she’s ready to come back. Yeah, it’s up to her.”

The potential move has sparked massive excitement across the women’s professional tennis circuit. Former champion Naomi Osaka expressed her delight, noting that the icon always draws a massive audience. Current French Open holder Coco Gauff also admitted that her biggest career regret was never facing the legend on court. If the stories are true, this highly anticipated women’s professional tennis comeback will delight fans worldwide. The sporting community is now waiting to see if the legend will officially return to women’s professional tennis this summer.

Do you think a successful doubles run at Queen’s will encourage Serena to try and equal the all-time Grand Slam singles record?
