Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after edging Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout following a fiercely contested final at the Puskas Arena on Saturday.
The French champions claimed back-to-back European crowns after overcoming the Premier League side in a match that remained deadlocked after both normal time and extra time.
Arsenal made the perfect start when Kai Havertz fired the Gunners into the lead in the sixth minute. The early goal gave Mikel Arteta’s side confidence as they looked to secure their first-ever Champions League final triumph.
However, Paris Saint-Germain gradually worked their way back into the contest and found an equaliser in the second half. Ousmane Dembele calmly converted from the penalty spot to bring the French side level and set up a tense finish.
Despite several chances at both ends, neither team could find a decisive goal during the remainder of regulation time. Extra time also failed to separate the two sides, forcing the outcome of the Champions League final to be decided by penalties.
In the shootout, PSG held their nerve while Arsenal suffered crucial misses. Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães both failed to convert their spot-kicks, handing the advantage to the reigning champions.
The victory ensured Paris Saint-Germain remained the dominant force in European club football, securing a second consecutive UEFA Champions League title and further strengthening their place among the continent’s elite clubs.
The result marks another painful near miss for Arsenal, who came within touching distance of European glory before falling short in the decisive moments from the penalty spot.
More details are expected to emerge as post-match reactions continue from the Champions League final.
