Portable says fear of arrest stops Nigerian celebrities from speaking on insecurity

|By Queen Banigo – Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable, says fear of arrest stops Nigerian celebrities from speaking on insecurity and economic hardship in the country.

Portable made the remarks while responding to British-Nigerian rapper Skepta, who recently urged Nigerian celebrities to speak out against worsening insecurity and rising economic challenges.

Speaking in a video shared online, Portable praised Skepta for raising concerns about Nigeria’s situation. However, he argued that celebrities living in the country face risks if they openly criticise the government.

According to him, Nigerians in the diaspora can speak more freely because they are outside the reach of local authorities.

Portable claimed that some public figures fear persecution if they express strong views on national issues. He also suggested that outspoken celebrities could face consequences, including possible restrictions on their movement.

Furthermore, the singer said many entertainers are frustrated by developments in the country. Nevertheless, he insisted that fear prevents them from becoming vocal critics.

Portable added that his immediate focus is improving his personal circumstances and earning a living. He stressed that silence should not be mistaken for a lack of concern about Nigeria’s challenges.

The comments have sparked debate on social media, with some Nigerians supporting his position while others argue that influential figures should use their platforms to advocate for change.

The discussion follows growing calls from activists and public figures for celebrities to play a more active role in conversations about governance, insecurity and economic hardship.
