|By Babatunji Wusu – The Super Eagles head coach said he invited several new players to strengthen the team and improve competition for places in the squad.
Éric Chelle handed opportunities to eight home-based players during the Unity Cup invitational tournament. In addition, players including Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Arthur Okonkwo and Rafiu Durosinmi made their debuts during the competition.
Meanwhile, Banik Ostrava defender Abdullahi Bewene earned his first Super Eagles appearance in the friendly against Poland. Genk defender Christian Akpan also received a late call-up for the upcoming friendly against Portugal.
Speaking to the Super Eagles media team, Éric Chelle said the decision followed a detailed review of the team’s performances over the past year.
“We have analysed our game over the past year and have tried to bring in players who can help the team grow,” he said.
Furthermore, Chelle stressed that improving the quality of the squad remains a top priority. According to him, success at the highest level often depends on small details.
“We need to improve because, for me and for everyone, it is often the smallest details that make the difference between being the best team and winning a trophy,” he added.
Éric Chelle’s approach signals a commitment to building a stronger and more competitive Super Eagles squad for future challenges.
