Nkem Owoh says social media fame cannot replace real talent in Nollywood

|By Queen Banigo – Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh says social media fame cannot replace real talent as concerns grow over the industry’s casting choices.

Speaking on the Selah Meditate Podcast, the actor, popularly known as Osuofia, dismissed claims that online popularity is taking the place of acting ability in Nollywood.

Nkem Owoh says social media fame cannot replace real talent, arguing that genuine skill remains the foundation of a successful acting career.

“I don’t think social media fame is replacing real talent. It can’t. There is no way social media fame can replace real talent,” he said.

His comments come after several Nigerian actors raised concerns about what they describe as a growing preference for social media influencers and physically attractive performers over trained actors.

Among those who have spoken out are actors Shine Rosman, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Osereme Inegbenebor. In separate interviews, they accused some filmmakers of prioritising online popularity, beauty, complexion, and physical appearance ahead of acting talent.

However, Owoh expressed confidence that talent will continue to stand out regardless of industry trends.

While critics argue that producers increasingly use social media metrics to attract audiences, Nkem Owoh says social media fame cannot replace real talent, insisting that true ability remains irreplaceable in the entertainment industry.

The debate continues as Nollywood stakeholders weigh commercial success against artistic excellence.
