Julius Abure warns NDC against giving Peter Obi excessive influence

|By Chinwendu Nwani – Factional Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure has warned the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) against granting Peter Obi and his supporters excessive influence within the party.

Julius Abure warns NDC against giving Peter Obi excessive influence after reports emerged of disagreements over the sharing of elective positions. He said the NDC leadership acted wisely by refusing to concede all positions demanded by Obi’s supporters.

In a statement issued on June 8, 2026, Abure said the decision reflected lessons learned from the Labour Party’s experience during and after the 2023 general election.

According to him, many politicians who secured positions on the Labour Party platform later turned against the party leadership. He argued that the party made significant sacrifices by accommodating Obi’s allies ahead of the elections.

“They say history usually repeats itself,” Abure said, adding that NDC leaders appeared to have learned from Labour Party’s challenges.

Furthermore, Abure claimed that several elected officials aligned with Obi and became involved in disputes over the party’s leadership structure instead of helping strengthen the party.

He also praised NDC leader Senator Seriake Dickson for maintaining balance in distributing political positions. According to Abure, party leaders should ensure that influence is shared among different groups to preserve internal stability.

Meanwhile, Abure accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of contributing to Labour Party’s post-election leadership crisis. He alleged that some leaders accepted claims that the tenure of party executives had expired.

The Labour Party chairman maintained that his remarks were based on public questions about how the party managed its relationship with Obi and his supporters during the 2022 and 2023 election period.

As political realignments continue ahead of future elections, Julius Abure warns NDC against giving Peter Obi excessive influence remains a debate likely to shape discussions within opposition parties.
