By Babatunji Wusu| Police in London have launched an urgent search for Temitope Segun, a 25-year-old inmate who escaped from a prison transport van on Monday evening. Officers are appealing to the public for information as efforts to locate him continue across the city.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Segun was last seen on Woolwich High Street at about 6:40 p.m. on Monday. The escape prompted a swift response from law enforcement, with several police units deployed to the area.

Videos circulating on social media appear to show the aftermath of the incident. The footage captures multiple police vehicles with flashing lights surrounding a prison van near the now-closed Waterfront Leisure Centre in Woolwich.

Investigators say Segun has known connections to several south London communities, including Woolwich, Plumstead, and Abbey Wood. Detectives have also released his photograph as part of the ongoing manhunt and are urging residents to remain vigilant.

Leading the investigation, Detective Sergeant Claudine Manning said officers are working continuously to track down the escaped inmate and bring him back into custody.

“My team of dedicated officers are working around the clock to trace and apprehend Temitope Segun. It is imperative that the public contact police via 999 if they see him, or know where he may be,” she said.

Police said Segun was last seen wearing a black jacket, black trousers, and black trainers. Authorities have advised members of the public not to approach him under any circumstances.

Anyone who sees Temitope Segun or has information that could assist the investigation should immediately call 999 and quote reference number 2270/10JUN. Officers believe public cooperation could play a key role in helping them locate the escaped inmate quickly and safely.
