A former Air Canada captain has been charged after Canadian authorities alleged he spent nearly three decades flying commercial aircraft with a forged pilot qualification. The case has drawn attention across the aviation industry, with investigators examining how the alleged deception remained undetected for so long.

Police said Geoffrey Wall, 59, of Barrie, worked for Air Canada for 27 years. He joined the airline as a first officer in 1998 and later became a captain in 2009 before retiring in 2025. Authorities allege that throughout much of his career, he operated under a fake pilot licence, a qualification required to command large passenger aircraft.

According to Peel Regional Police, Wall flew around 900 domestic and international flights and earned millions of dollars while allegedly using forged credentials. Investigators discovered irregularities in his licence documents during a routine evaluation at Toronto Pearson International Airport in March 2025. The findings prompted further investigations by Transport Canada and law enforcement agencies.

Authorities stated that although Wall possessed a valid commercial pilot licence, he never obtained the airline transport pilot licence (ATPL) needed to captain aircraft such as the Boeing 767, Boeing 777 and Boeing 787. Police also alleged that he attempted to hide the fraud by filing a false police report.

The former captain now faces charges including fraud over $5,000, uttering forged documents, possession of a counterfeit mark and public mischief. He is expected to appear before a court in Brampton on June 29.

Air Canada maintained that passenger safety was “not compromised,” stressing that pilots undergo mandatory recurrent training and regular competency checks. However, Peel Police Deputy Chief Nick Milonovich underscored the seriousness of the allegations, stating, “When we misrepresent the qualifications that we have, that is a safety issue.”
