By Babatunji Wusu| The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced the four astronauts selected for the historic Artemis III mission, marking another major step towards returning humans to the Moon.
The crew includes three Americans and one European astronaut. Randy Bresnik will serve as commander, while Italian European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Luca Parmitano will take on the role of pilot. Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas have been named mission specialists. NASA astronaut Bob Hines will act as backup crew member and participate in training alongside the team.
Scheduled for launch in 2027, the Artemis III mission will travel aboard the Orion spacecraft, powered by the Space Launch System rocket. NASA officials describe the project as one of the agency’s most challenging undertakings to date.
“This mission will be one of the most complex that NASA has undertaken,” NASA Flight Operations Director Norm Knight said Tuesday.
Unlike earlier missions, the Artemis III mission will operate in low Earth orbit and test critical docking and rendezvous procedures between Orion and commercial lunar landers developed by Blue Origin and SpaceX. These tests will help prepare for future lunar landings and support long-term exploration goals. The astronauts will also spend several days conducting in-space evaluations of life-support systems and other technologies that cannot be fully tested on Earth.
NASA has equipped the mission with several upgrades, including a new docking mechanism, enhanced communications systems and an improved heat shield.
“This mission is going to captivate the world and bring us Earth joy,” said Vanessa Wyche, Director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center.
The crew will now begin an intensive year-long training programme. NASA believes the lessons learned from this mission will improve safety and operational readiness for future expeditions. The Artemis III mission is expected to last around two weeks and will play a key role in advancing plans to place astronauts back on the lunar surface.
