By Babatunji Wusu| President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has announced plans to establish what he described as the largest industrial and free trade zone in Nigeria in Ondo State, with construction scheduled to begin in the final quarter of 2026.
Dangote revealed the proposal during a courtesy visit to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akure, outlining a multi-billion-dollar investment package that will cover power generation, gas infrastructure, cement production and industrial manufacturing.
The proposed Olokola Industrial Zone is expected to serve as a fully equipped investment hub with independent electricity, water supply and other essential infrastructure designed to attract both local and international investors. According to Dangote, the goal is to create an environment where businesses can operate efficiently without facing major infrastructure challenges.
“We want to create the biggest free trade zone where investors can simply come and plug in. We will generate power, provide infrastructure and remove the bottlenecks around doing business,” Dangote said.
He noted that unreliable electricity remains a major obstacle to industrial growth in Nigeria, forcing many companies to generate their own power and increasing operating costs. To address this challenge, the Olokola Industrial Zone will include dedicated energy facilities and an east-west gas corridor to ensure uninterrupted industrial operations.
Dangote explained that earlier efforts to develop projects in Olokola faced operational difficulties, prompting the company to focus major investments in Lagos. However, he expressed confidence that stronger collaboration with the Ondo State Government and improved conditions would ensure the success of the new venture.
The businessman disclosed that contractors are expected to mobilise to the site within the next three to four months. He added that the project would create thousands of jobs, boost exports and stimulate economic activities across the region.
Governor Aiyedatiwa welcomed the investment, describing the Olokola Industrial Zone as a major boost to the state’s industrialisation drive. He assured the Dangote Group of full government support, revealing that a technical committee has already been established to facilitate the project’s successful implementation.
