Ekiti governorship election records low voter turnout at polling unit

|By Adejumo Adekunle – The Ekiti governorship election records low voter turnout, according to election observer group Yiaga Africa, which monitored the poll held on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

Yiaga Africa said its preliminary findings showed that voter participation ranged between 34.0% and 38.1%. The organisation reached the estimate using its Process and Results Verification for Transparency (PRVT) methodology.

According to the group, the estimate was based on reports received from between 246 and 250 sampled polling units, representing about 98% of the polling units selected for observation across the state.

Yiaga Africa stated that if the official figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fall within the estimated range, they would accurately reflect the number of voters who turned out at polling units during the election.

The observer group deployed 250 stationary observers and 22 mobile observers across all 16 local government areas in Ekiti State. In addition, it assigned 16 observers to monitor results collation at the local government level.

Furthermore, Yiaga Africa said the deployment formed part of efforts to strengthen transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.

The Ekiti governorship election records low voter turnout at a time when concerns continue to grow about voter apathy in Nigeria. Analysts have repeatedly linked low participation to declining public trust, economic challenges and voter disengagement.

Meanwhile, stakeholders are expected to review the outcome and examine factors that may have contributed to the turnout figures.

As attention shifts to INEC’s final report, the Ekiti governorship election records low voter turnout remains one of the major talking points from the poll.
