Peter Obi has declared that President Bola Tinubu should leave office in 2027, arguing that the country cannot continue under what he described as failed leadership. The former Labour Party presidential candidate said he is not seeking power for personal ambition but wants Nigeria to work.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Obi criticised the Tinubu administration over worsening poverty and insecurity. He claimed millions more Nigerians have fallen below the poverty line since the current government assumed office.
According to Obi, many business owners who were once financially stable have struggled to survive. He said some have turned to selling kuli-kuli to make ends meet, which he described as a sign of economic hardship.
Furthermore, Peter Obi argued that Nigerians should reject any attempt to “renew failure.” He insisted that the country deserves leadership capable of improving security, creating economic opportunities and restoring hope.
“Tinubu is tired and needs to go home and rest. When Tinubu came into power, 87 million Nigerians were in poverty, but today it’s 140 million. Insecurity has gotten worse. Which hope are they going to renew again? You can’t renew failure,” Obi said.
He also maintained that he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s president. Instead, he said his priority is to see the country function effectively and deliver better outcomes for its citizens.
The Presidency has consistently defended its economic reforms, arguing that current policies are necessary to stabilise the economy despite short-term hardship. However, Obi’s latest comments are likely to intensify political debate ahead of the 2027 general election.
As political activities gradually gather momentum, Peter Obi‘s remarks are expected to fuel further discussions over governance, economic reforms and the direction of Nigeria’s future.
