Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has begun moves to reunite members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the party’s National Assembly primaries. The reconciliation effort led to party leaders unanimously reaffirming him as the leader of the APC in Ondo State during a meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Akure. The Ondo APC unity drive also saw stakeholders pledge stronger support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general elections.
The gathering brought together members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and other senior APC leaders. At the end of the meeting, they issued a communiqué promising to promote reconciliation, strengthen internal cohesion and preserve the party’s progressive values across the state.
Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council, Chief Pius Akinyelure, described the meeting as the council’s first since the party primaries. He said it reflected the determination of party leaders to settle internal disagreements and maintain the stability of the APC.
“This council last met on August 9, 2025. We thank God for preserving us and giving us another chance to discuss issues affecting Ondo State and our party,” Akinyelure said.
He stressed that unity remained the party’s greatest asset, adding that political disagreements were a normal part of democracy and could be resolved through dialogue, mutual respect and sacrifice. He also urged party leaders and government officials to work together to improve on the APC’s performance in the state during the 2023 presidential election, noting that Ondo State recorded the second-highest percentage of votes for Tinubu nationwide.
Akinyelure further praised the Aiyedatiwa administration and appealed to party members to avoid actions capable of creating fresh divisions within the APC. He added that leaders were satisfied with the steps being taken to strengthen the Ondo APC unity agenda.
Former senator representing Ondo North, Ajayi Boroffice, said the meeting resolved to rally behind Governor Aiyedatiwa and ensure that all members recognised his leadership. “Aiyedatiwa is the institution representing the APC in Ondo State.
“We will also intensify mobilisation for President Tinubu and engage the national leadership to reaffirm our solidarity.”
Boroffice added that party leaders remained committed to resolving issues arising from recent political contests and building a stronger APC.
The APC South-West Vice Chairman, Isaac Kekemeke, disclosed that more than 30 party leaders at the meeting reaffirmed their commitment to President Tinubu’s second-term ambition. He also said stakeholders agreed that all political support groups operating within the APC in Ondo State should function under Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, while urging the party’s national leadership to involve key stakeholders in decisions affecting the state chapter.
Can the renewed Ondo APC unity effort strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections?
