BitMEX to Shut Down Exchange Operations

Cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX has announced that it will shut down its operations on 23 September, following a strategic review of the business. The company assured customers that their assets remain secure and fully under their control throughout the closure process.

In a statement shared on X, HDR Global Trading, the owner and operator of BitMEX, said the decision followed an internal assessment of the business. The company also advised users to close their open trading positions and withdraw their funds before the shutdown date.

Founded in 2014, BitMEX has grown into a major platform for institutional and professional derivatives traders, with more than two million users worldwide, according to its website.

The exchange has previously faced legal challenges. In 2022, BitMEX co-founders Benjamin Delo, Arthur Hayes and Samuel Reed pleaded guilty to failing to implement an anti-money laundering programme that complied with the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act. Prosecutors alleged that the company failed to establish proper anti-money laundering and know-your-customer procedures between 2015 and 2020. However, U.S. President Donald Trump granted the three founders pardons last year as part of his administration’s approach to lighter cryptocurrency regulation.

The closure comes during a difficult period for the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin has given up much of the gains it recorded after Donald Trump’s election victory, trading at $65,676, almost 50 per cent below its all-time high of $126,223.18 in October last year.

Analysts say continued market volatility, persistent outflows from Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), slow progress on U.S. cryptocurrency legislation and concerns over potential Bitcoin sales by digital asset treasury companies have weakened investor confidence across the sector.
