Otamendi Ends Illustrious Argentina Career

Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi has announced his retirement from international football, ending a remarkable 17-year career that included World Cup glory and two Copa America titles.

The 38-year-old centre-back made 139 appearances for Argentina and played his final international match in this year’s World Cup final in the United States, where the defending champions lost 1-0 to Spain.

Confirming his decision on Instagram, Nicolas Otamendi reflected on an unforgettable journey with the national team.

“Today I have to write the most difficult words of my career,” Otamendi posted. “As fate would have it, my last match was a World Cup final. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but I’m leaving with my head held high, knowing that this team gave it their all right up to the very last second.

“Thank you, Argentina, for allowing me to fulfil the dream of becoming a world champion.”

Nicolas Otamendi played a key role in Argentina’s success during one of the most memorable periods in the nation’s football history. He helped the team lift the 2022 World Cup and also won two Copa America titles, cementing his place among the country’s most accomplished defenders.

The experienced defender recently joined River Plate after ending a successful 16-year career in Europe. During that time, he represented Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica, winning several major honours across the continent.

Otamendi also featured in four World Cups, becoming one of Argentina’s most experienced and respected international players.
