Warriors Keep Draymond Green on New One-Year Deal

The Golden State Warriors have secured the future of Draymond Green, re-signing the four-time NBA champion to a one-year, $28 million contract after missing out on the signing of LeBron James. The Draymond Green deal follows the Warriors’ unsuccessful pursuit of the veteran superstar, who agreed to join the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this week. Green’s return ensures the franchise retains one of its longest-serving leaders as it prepares for another NBA season.

The 36-year-old forward had declined the same contract last month to create additional salary cap space while Golden State attempted to lure LeBron James in free agency.

With James choosing the 76ers, the Warriors and Green agreed to finalise the Draymond Green deal under the original terms.

Green has spent his entire NBA career with the Warriors since being selected in the 2012 NBA Draft. Alongside Stephen Curry, he helped build one of the league’s most successful teams, winning championships in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022.

Although his scoring output has declined in recent years, Green remains a key defensive player and one of the team’s most influential voices on and off the court.

The veteran also revealed on a recent podcast that he personally tried to persuade LeBron James to join the Warriors, saying he took “the opportunity to throw my pitch in there.”

While Green’s future is now settled, attention has shifted to Stephen Curry, who continues to be linked with rival clubs, including the Miami Heat.

The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, who has also spent his entire career in Golden State, will soon become eligible to sign a two-year, $137 million contract extension with the Warriors.
