The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ishyaku Mohammed to coordinate security operations for the 15 August Osun governorship election.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu said the deployment forms part of measures to ensure a peaceful, secure and credible election across the state. Mohammed will coordinate the police’s election-security operations while working with other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.
Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police will support him across Osun’s three senatorial districts. They will oversee operations, strengthen intelligence-led policing and respond quickly to emerging threats.
The police said its Osun election security plan will protect voters, INEC officials, election materials, polling and collation centres, accredited observers and media practitioners before, during and after the poll.
Disu warned political actors, supporters and potential troublemakers against ballot snatching, voter intimidation, political thuggery and other electoral offences, saying offenders would face arrest and prosecution.
He also reiterated the ban on armed escorts, security aides and unauthorised persons accompanying political figures or VIPs to polling and collation centres. State security outfits, quasi-security groups and private security organisations are equally barred from election-security duties.
The IGP assured residents and visitors of adequate Osun election security, urging eligible voters to exercise their rights peacefully. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to professionalism, neutrality, human rights and electoral integrity.
The development follows the 31 July deployment of CP Samuel Erale to oversee the election, replacing CP Ibrahim Gotan amid calls for his removal over alleged partisanship and concerns about election-related security.
