NAFDAC bans potassium bromate: Agency threatens sanctions against Niger bakers

NAFDAC bans potassium bromate and has warned bakers in Niger State against using the substance and other banned ingredients in bread production.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) issued the warning during a one-day sensitisation programme for master bakers in the Minna Emirate.

NAFDAC State Coordinator in Niger State, James Kigbu, urged bakers to comply with food safety regulations. He specifically warned them against using potassium bromate and saccharin in bread production.

The agency also cautioned bakers against using unapproved labels and advertisements on their products.

Kigbu said the agency would not tolerate practices that breach its regulations. He warned that bakeries found using banned bread improvers could face immediate closure.

In addition, offending businesses could face administrative fines and prosecution.

The warning comes as NAFDAC continues to push for greater compliance among food producers and other businesses involved in the production and sale of regulated products.

For bakers, the message is clear. They must ensure that ingredients used in bread meet approved safety standards. They must also ensure that product labels and advertisements comply with NAFDAC requirements.

The agency said compliance remains important for protecting consumers and maintaining standards in the food industry.
