The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested suspects over illegal NIN enrolment in Gwagwalada, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and other locations across Nigeria.

The commission also seized equipment allegedly used for the unauthorised enrolment activities.

NIMC announced the arrests in a statement issued on Monday by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke.

It said its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit carried out the operation as part of efforts to stop illegal enrolment, unauthorised data modification and extortion of applicants.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reaffirmed the commission’s zero-tolerance policy towards extortion and unprofessional conduct.

She stressed that Nigerians must complete NIN enrolment only at approved centres.

The commission also warned against using unauthorised agents to modify personal information. Instead, applicants should use NIMC’s official self-service platform for data modifications.

Furthermore, the commission advised Nigerians to download the NINAuth application to access security features, including NIN protection and National Identification Number slip printing.

NIMC urged members of the public to avoid illegal enrolment centres and report suspicious activities through its official channels.

It also provided a toll-free telephone number, 0800 0616 462, for enquiries and complaints.

The commission said the enforcement operation forms part of its wider efforts to protect applicants’ personal information and ensure that authorised channels handle NIN-related services.
