The Police and INEC collaboration must improve to ensure peaceful elections and smooth election logistics, INEC Chairman Professor Jaosh Amupitan has said.
Mr Amupitan made the statement on Wednesday at the Conference for Senior Police Officers in Owerri.
He said the Independent National Electoral Commission and law enforcement agencies must work together to support the electoral process.
According to him, stronger cooperation between the police and INEC can help both institutions address security and logistical challenges during elections.
However, he stressed that the partnership must not create conflict between the agencies.
He said cooperation should instead promote understanding and prevent disharmony between those responsible for election management and security.
The INEC chairman said both sides need to understand their respective responsibilities while working towards a peaceful electoral process.
In addition, he emphasised the importance of coordination as election officials and security personnel carry out their duties.
The Police and INEC collaboration is important because election officials rely on security agencies to maintain order during electoral activities.
At the same time, INEC remains responsible for organising and managing elections within its legal mandate.
Therefore, effective communication between the two institutions can help reduce misunderstandings and improve coordination.
Mr Amupitan’s comments come as election authorities and security agencies continue to discuss ways to strengthen electoral processes.
The conference in Owerri brought senior police officers together to discuss issues relating to policing and public security.
For the INEC chairman, the focus should remain on cooperation without allowing institutional responsibilities to clash.
He said the partnership must support peace, proper logistics and a coordinated approach to election duties.
