The ATP Tour confirmed that the 29-year-old German would claim the year-end ranking, helped by an injury that has ruled current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner out for the rest of the season.
Although Zverev currently sits at No. 2, he will move above Sinner before the season ends next month. His position became secure after world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz lost to Zizou Bergs at the Shanghai Masters.
Zverev is scheduled to face Alexander Bublik at the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday as he continues his campaign.
The German enjoyed an outstanding year, winning the French Open and US Open titles. He also reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the final at Wimbledon. Before this season, his best Grand Slam results had been three runner-up finishes.
“It’s been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true,” Zverev said.
He also reflected on the effort required to reach the top after suffering a serious ankle injury during his 2022 French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal.
“So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury,” Zverev added.
Sinner has not competed since losing to Zverev in the Wimbledon final in July. Last week, he announced that inflammation in his right knee would keep him out for the remainder of the season.
Zverev finished 2024 as the year-end world No. 2, but his latest achievement marks a major milestone in his career.
Can Zverev maintain his form and begin next season with another Grand Slam title?
