The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against sharing a fake governorship candidates list for the 2027 elections, saying the publication did not originate from the commission.
INEC issued the warning in a public notice posted on its official X account. It urged the public to disregard the document and avoid circulating it online.
The INEC fake governorship candidates list reportedly concerns six states: Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.
The commission said the publication falsely claimed to be a special announcement about governorship candidates in the affected states.
INEC stated that it had not issued the announcement. It also described the circulating document as fraudulent.
The commission advised Nigerians to verify election-related information through its official communication channels before sharing it.
These channels include the INEC website, its verified social media accounts and the INEC News Portal.
The warning comes as political parties and aspirants prepare for the 2027 general elections. However, INEC said the circulating notice about governorship candidates in the six states was not an official publication. The commission urged members of the public to rely on verified notices and press releases for accurate information about electoral matters.
It also cautioned against spreading the document further, stressing that the public should disregard the false announcement.
Nigerians can check the commission’s official website at https://www.inecnigeria.org/ for updates and announcements.
INEC also maintains verified social media accounts under the name INEC Nigeria on Facebook and @inecnigeria on X and Instagram.
The commission has asked the public to use these official channels to confirm election information rather than rely on unverified online publications.
