On Tuesday, an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sentenced Olamide Ayodele, 27, to life in prison for defiling the eight-year-old daughter of a man who gave him shelter.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the convict was 25 years old when he committed the crime.

Justice Abiola Soladoye ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven the convict’s defilement charge.

According to Soladoye, the court found the prosecution witnesses’ evidence to be credible and consistent.

“Considering that the survivor’s father picked him up from the streets and treated him like one of his children, the defendant is immoral, a mega liar, ungrateful, unkind, ruthless, and rash in his conduct,” she said.

“The court specifically noted that the defense’s attempts to pin the offence on the survivor’s brother were unsuccessful.

“The defense’s attempt to mislead the court by claiming that the survivor’s brother’s evidence was expunged when it was not. This was a complete misrepresentation of the court’s records.

“Lastly, the evidence of the defendant was wrought with lies and unreliable as he desperately sought to distance himself from the alleged offence.

“I am satisfied that the prosecution has proven the element of defilement against the defendant.

“I hereby find the defendant guilty as charged and he is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment.”

The convict’s name was ordered to be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register by the judge.

Mrs. Olufunke Adegoke and Ms. Abimbola Abolade, the state’s counsel, told the court that the convict committed the crime on January 19, 2020, at around 3 p.m. on Ofini Street, Ijaiye, Meiran in Lagos.

According to the prosecution, the survivor was sleeping in the afternoon when the convict entered the room, covered her mouth with a cloth, defiled her, and then left the house to watch football in a viewing center.

According to prosecutors, the survivor’s grandmother entered the room and saw her in a pool of blood before reporting the incident to police.

According to NAN, the prosecution called five witnesses during the trial, while the defendant was the only witness for the defense.

The offence is contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Law, 2015.
