One of the ECOWAS penalties for the country’s coup reportedly included Nigeria’s electricity supply to the Niger Republic.
According to the BBC, Nigeria cut off the Niger Republic’s electricity supply on August 1st, 2023.
Omar Tchiani, a general who also goes by the name Abdourahmane Tchiani, proclaimed himself president while Mohamed Bazoum, the duly elected president of Niger, has been detained by the military ever since the coup last week.
According to the research, power outages in Niger have become more common than they were in the past since residents of the cities of Niamey, Maradi, and Zinder could only have power for approximately an hour at a time.
According to Nigelec, who was cited by the BBC, the power cuts in Niger are a result of Nigeria’s h@lting supply to its northern neighbor.
Additionally, on August 2, 2023, a group from ECOWAS would convene in Niger to begin mediation under the leadership of former military ruler Abdulsalami Abubakar.
